Inspired by the Chinese netizens who used emoticons to bypass and circumvent the censorship of the whistleblower Ai Fen’s interview, I interpret the still life genre with emoticons that are too bold and detailed, reminding us of the embryonic state of communication that symbols offer, while the true message can never be deciphered from the surface alone.
